His first steps into the moving image were precipitated by an interest in video art, specifically the work of Bruce Nauman, Paul McCarthy, and the films of Andy Warhol. In typical Warhol fashion his first video had no edits. Over the years his work has become increasingly intricate, adding character, plot, and narrative and blending the traditions of video art, documentary and narrative film, culminating in the feature film UNLOOSENED AND ROOT.
In 2005, his first documentary short, THE BOAT, premiered at MoMA in New York City. In 2001, he wrote, produced and performed the one-person play, FAKE FLOWERS, Part IV (the old man live), which was staged at Galapagos in Brooklyn and Dixon Place in Manhattan, collaborating with Argentinean composer, Fernando Otero, for the first time. Afterwards, in 2003, he produced an audio CD based on the play titled, FAKE FLOWERS, Part V (doubting t.o.m. [the old man])", featuring music by Otero. His first feature length video, "FAKE FLOWERS, Part II, III and I(2)" was shown at Postmasters Gallery in New York City in 1996.
Since 1999, David has managed Outpost Artists Resources, a non-profit video post-production facility in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that provides editing for artists at subsidized rates and a free residency program. He is currently developing his second feature film effort which will further explore the theme of death ritual begun in UNLOOSENED AND ROOT. David was raised in North Carolina but now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
