The sights and sounds of a remote Japanese village by the sea convey the isolation of a newly remarried widow trying to move forward after her first husband's inexplicable suicide. A carefully composed array of visuals carries the simple, poignant plot. Director Kore-eda's elegiac debut film earned awards at the Venice, Vancouver, and Chicago Film Festivals.
